How KYC/Identity Verification Works

Learn about Topstep's KYC (Know Your Customer) identity verification process, including when it's required, what to expect, and how to complete it.

What is KYC (Know Your Customer)?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is a process meant to verify the identity of any trader participating in the Topstep program. This is required and provides you with an extra layer of security for your account. Your information will be stored on an encrypted server with our partners at Veriff. KYC verification is a one-time process, and once completed, your account status will update to "Verification Complete."

When is KYC verification required?

Once you are ready to make your second purchase with Topstep, you will receive an email prompting you to verify your identity using an acceptable, valid government-issued ID.

Can I continue trading without it?

Traders will still be able to log in and trade, but any additional purchases (new accounts, Resets, etc.) will not be processed without completing the KYC verification first.

How will I know I need to complete this?

Traders will receive an email confirming that KYC verification needs to be completed, and there will be a banner on their dashboard to notify them of the process.

What do I need to complete the KYC process?

You will need an original (physical) government-issued ID (Passport, Driver’s License, National ID card) and a device with a camera (mobile phone or computer). Ensure that the ID is not a photocopy or an image displayed on another device, and avoid using IDs with sticky notes or coverings.

How long does the entire process take?

You can complete the verification in minutes if you have your ID card ready to go.

You will take a photo of your ID (including the back, where applicable) and a selfie. Follow these steps:
1. Prepare your ID and ensure it is unexpired.
2. Use the secure link or QR code provided in your KYC email to access the verification system.
3. Take clear photos of your ID and a selfie, ensuring good lighting and no obstructions.

Why am I being asked to verify again?

Our team may reach out to you to re-verify if either our partners at Veriff or our internal team identifies a verification that needs clarification.

I am having issues completing my verification. What do I do?

If you encounter issues during KYC verification, try the following troubleshooting tips:

  1. Switch to a different web browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Safari) or try using another device such as a tablet, laptop, or phone.

  2. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies, restart your device, and ensure that microphone and camera access are enabled.

  3. Make sure the photo of your ID is clear and meets the platform’s requirements. Blurry or incomplete images may cause delays.

  4. If your submission is rejected, confirm that your ID is unexpired and a physical document. Resubmit using the secure link or QR code.

For additional help, review this article from our partners at Veriff. If your account is flagged for review, respond promptly to any verification requests and provide the required documents. Ensure your device’s time zone and location settings are accurate, and avoid using VPNs or VPSs to prevent location discrepancies.
